It Takes a Community to Help a Smoker
The Salvation Army of Wisconsin & Upper Michigan was awarded $473,883 for "It Takes a Community to Help a Smoker" to reduce tobacco use through prevention and smoking cessation strategies for residents in the 53212 Milwaukee zip code area. This grant was one of 21 grants totaling $5.3 million awarded in 2007 by the Wisconsin Partnership, which was formed when Blue Cross Blue Shield United of Wisconsin converted to a for-profit corporation and proceeds from the sale of stock were distributed to the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health.
Outcomes
Outcomes include the understanding of barriers that prevent impoverished smokers from getting evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment, using proven methods of engaging community that reaches this population, and finding specific messages that effectively address identified barriers.
