Western Wisconsin Cultural Initiative
This program helped enrich the musical offerings of several rural school districts in western Wisconsin by way of a brass trio ensemble, school programs and community concerts. During the project's first and second years, the trio conducted 10 outreach programs and 10 concerts each year. Class projects included students developing artistic visual presentations and holding discussions on how music intersects with math, physics and the visual arts. During the third year of the project, the trio continued reaching several thousand students and citizens in western Wisconsin. A total of 35 concerts and 45 teaching days were conducted. A disparity between high and low per pupial funding deficiency inspired the program. The use of high quality live music performers and contemporary teachers, free of charge, prompted the project.
Outcomes
A better relationship was forged between the UW-Madison community and these towns and schools. Many collaborative efforts with cross-discipline students and faculty in communities were formed. Combining musicianship in concerts with community members and students was particularly successful. Many students, community members, and musicians were given the opportunity to share the stage with trained musicians.
