Great World Texts in Wisconsin
Great World Texts in Wisconsin connects scholars at UW-Madison with thousands of high school students and teachers in dozens of school districts through the shared project of reading and discussing a classic piece of literature. Drawing from world literature throughout the ages, the program includes a colloquium in which participating teachers work with UW faculty members on interpreting and understanding each text, extensive supporting curriculum materials, and an Annual Student Conference.
Outcomes
This project has increased readership and awareness of great literature since 2005 by supporting teachers financially and academically to teach the selected text in the classroom. Most of the participants would not have taught the text without the support of this program. Each year an average of 40 teachers from around the state and more than 500 students have participated. This increases an awareness of literature in both schools and the surrounding community; adults in these communities have started book clubs thanks to this program.
