German Words—American Voices
Drawing on recently digitized interviews from the North American German Dialect Archive at the UW–Madison Max Kade Institute, "German Words, American Voices" is devoted to interpreting American, and especially Wisconsin, history through the first-hand stories of the descendants of German-speaking immigrants. Max Kade Institute staff travel across Wisconsin presenting excerpts from these oral historical documents, addressing a range of topics -- including local history, multilingualism, folk traditions and contacts between diverse ethnic communities. The general goal of this project is to promote an appreciation for Wisconsin’s multilingual and multicultural heritage.
Outcomes
The team has produced a compact disc and companion booklet that is available free of charge to interested persons from the Max Kade Institute. Funding was provided by a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany/Chicago Consulate General.
