Study on the Economic Impact of Tax and Spending Limits on Local Governments
Fairly or not, Wisconsin has been branded as a high-tax state. This has spurred elected officials to impose tax and spending limits on local governments, but some research indicates that these limits actually hinder economic growth. Economist Steven Deller is taking a two-part approach to understanding whether such initiatives spur or stem economic activity. He is collaborating with a Missouri researcher to review the economic impact of the many such mandates now in place across the nation. He is also teaming a UW-Oshkosh researcher to see how such limits are affecting local governments throughout Wisconsin, with special attention to K-12 education in rural areas.
Outcomes
Results from this study have been shared in Municipalities, the magazine of the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, in workshops for that organization, at a conference of the Wisconsin Alliance of Cities, the Wisconsin Administrators and Clerks Association, and through the statewide network of UW Extension community economic development agents.
