Public Library Director Certification Courses
Continuing Education Services at the UW-Madison School of Library and Information Studies provides online certification courses for Wisconsin's library directors. In municipalities with populations under 6,000, library directors are required to take four library science courses if they do not have a master's degree in library science. There are 270 such libraries in the state. The courses focus on management, selection of library materials, organization of materials and reference services. These courses ensure every public library in Wisconsin is led by a competent and knowledgeable professional, and they also help to create a community of practitioners for new library directors.
Outcomes
A certified library director is required for public libraries to remain members of their library system. Library systems offer a host of shared services to member libraries such as technology training, delivery services, shared lending of materials and shared software. System membership saves each individual library money by consolidating services, which, in turn, conserves the funds of Wisconsin counties, municipalities and the state overall.
