The Wisconsin Idea in Action

Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF)

The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to stewarding the cycle of research, discovery, commercialization and investment for the University of Wisconsin. Since its founding in 1925 as one of the world’s first university-based technology transfer offices, WARF has been investing in research at UW–Madison, partnering with companies all over the world to help the landmark discoveries of the university improve the lives of millions. In 2005, WARF received the National Medal of Technology—the nation’s highest honor for technology innovation—for its years of long-term, successful support of the entire cycle of innovation, from research to invention to investment.

Outcomes

With thousands of UW–Madison discoveries processed, U.S. patents obtained and agreements negotiated across the globe, WARF has become a world leader in bringing technology to market. WARF’s grants of tens of millions of dollars each year contribute to the margin of excellence that has helped make UW–Madison one of the world’s premier research universities, and the foundation’s stewardship of patent and licensing royalties ensures that the university will continue to yield breakthrough discoveries and technologies. WARF’s investments—including time, expertise and more than $1 billion—have helped UW–Madison researchers make a difference.
