Clinical Genetics Outreach Services
For over 30 years, Clinical Genetics Outreach Services have operated medical genetics clinics in partnership with local hospitals and clinics in various regions of the state. These include diagnostic and medical management services for children, adults and families with congenital anomalies and metabolic and other genetic disorders. Medical genetics specialists from UW-Madison travel to these clinics and work with genetics counselors who are either based in the community or travel from the university with the physicians. The emphasis of this outreach has always been to provide family-centered, community-based care whenever possible.
Outcomes
This outreach aims to provide improved access to medical subspecialty services for patients and families in distant regions of the state, expert medical support for community-based genetics counseling services, and Maternal and Child Health funding to support clinical genetics activities in the state ($118,000 in FY 2007).
