Mentorship Achievement Program
Mentorship Achievement Program (MAP) is a mentoring program connecting UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health and UW School of Pharmacy students with at-risk middle school students in the Madison area. The program is designed to support youths who may find the transition from adolescence into adulthood particularly difficult by providing support, friendship and a positive role model. The program also aims to increase excitement about learning by exposure to higher education and academic encouragement from mentors. MAP works closely with the counselors at partnering schools in order to effectively make a mentor/mentee match.
Outcomes
MAP has an average of 35 pairs per academic year with 27 percent of pairs continuing the program for two years or more. Mentees report enjoying activities, learning from their mentors, trusting their mentors, being glad they participated, and wanting to go to college. Medical students report that the experience was valuable, that they had a positive impact on their mentee, want to continue the relationship, were exposed to racial and social disparities, and feel more culturally competent.
