Allied United for Health
Allied United for Health (AUH) organizes health outreach programming for the community-campus partnership between the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health and the Allied Wellness Center (AWC), which was established in summer 2006. The AWC has extended itself as a community learning site for UW-Madison students beginning in December 2004. Students are exposed to a community in which many individuals struggle to meet their most basic needs, which offers students an important, real-time lesson in the powerful influence of the social determinants of health.
Outcomes
This partnership has made it possible for the AWC to host over 100 different health promotion programs with more than 1,000 attendees since 2007. Medical students report that volunteering for this program adds value to their medical school experience and exposes them to health disparities, while providing meaningful experience in community health outreach in underserved neighborhoods. Programming is community driven and community responsive, with adult and child programming opportunities.
