Exploring Materials Science: Research Experiences for Teachers Program

The Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program is funded by the National Science Foundation and is hosted by the UW-Madison Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). The MRSEC RET program provides an intensive, 7-week, full-time professional development opportunity for K-12 teachers during the summer. RET teachers work with MRSEC faculty members, students, and staff on a research and curriculum development project related to materials science research. The program is a combination of research and curriculum development, and the resulting teaching modules are made available online.

Outcomes

Each year 3-4 K-12 teachers benefit from a research and professional development experience. In turn, their students benefit from the teachers' participation in the RET program. Each teacher in the program also interacts with about 8 UW staff, faculty, and students, who all gain professional development from mentoring teachers and learning about the K-12 education system.
