Sharing in the Discovery (featuring the UW-Madison Stem Cell Learning Lab)
Sharing in the Discovery invites citizens of Wisconsin to take a stake in health sciences research by providing experiences in communities and on campus in exploring the science, medicine and ethical issues related stem cells and of regenerative medicine. The project is a partnership among the new Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine Center, the Primate Center, and the Biotechnology Center. Working with Wisconsin 4-H, the Wisconsin Alumni Association and other organizations, program instructors reach schools and communities across the state with hands-on experiences exploring stem cells, examining the current limits and potential powers of regenerative medicine, and delving into ethical and policy issues.
Outcomes
Sharing in the Discovery workshops are offered to students in grades 4-12 and to lifelong learners. The project teams with existing venues such as Science Expeditions, the Wisconsin Science Festival, Wisconsin State Fair, the State Science Olympiad, UW-Extension College Days, Grandparents University and the UW Speakers Bureau to expand the opportunities for Wisconsin citizens to learn about regenerative medicine and stem cells and connect with researchers at UW-Madison. Since opening in 2009, the Stem Cell Learning Lab and its on-the-road programs and talks have drawn more than 20,000 visitors to campus, as well as to school and community programs.
