The UW Historic Aerial Photography of Wisconsin Project
The UW Map Library owns an extensive and popular collection of historic aerial photography of Wisconsin, dating back to the 1930s. The project will provide easier access for Wisconsin residents looking for these photos, while at the same time digitally preserving the collection of deteriorating 70 year-old contact prints. Access to these images via the Internet would allow researchers from a variety of disciplines across Wisconsin (and the country) to view the historic landscapes of Wisconsin from physical, cultural, ecological, economic or social perspectives.
Outcomes
The final goal is to have online access to the digital images, searchable via a map interface for easy navigation and site location. This resource will make it possible for anyone with Internet access to view and download these images. The Baldwin funding can be used to secure additional (outside) funds to continue digitizing all of the 200,000+ aerial photos in the UW collection. Moreover, this project will serve as a template for other libraries and states that face similar problems of aging materials and limited access.
