UW Cinematheque
The Cinematheque is dedicated to showcasing the best in international cinema history and contemporary movies which would otherwise never reach Madison screens. As the screening facility of the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research (WCFTR) and a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), the Cinematheque regularly showcases archival and other rare prints from around the world. The Cinematheque screens films while the University is in session during the Fall and Spring semesters and for four to five weeks during the summer. The Cinematheque has one of the finest projection facilities in Wisconsin and screens a variety of formats, including 35mm and 4K DCP. All screenings are free and open to the public.
Outcomes
The Cinematheque provides entertainment and cinema culture to UW Madison students and to the greater Madison community free of charge. We have become an arts and cultural force in Madison, screening rare and often expensive prints that would otherwise never reach Madison audiences. In addition, we contextualize our screenings with free program notes, which educate our audiences about media in general, the film industry, film as art, and specific works and personalities. We also often host guest filmmakers and lecturers.
